In the United Kingdom, BeeSAM2 combines artificial intelligence and computer vision to detect bee visits to cherry blossoms with high accuracy, reducing manual analysis while improving research into pollination, fruit set, crop stability and orchard productivity.

Bumblebees play a key role in the pollination service, particularly during rainy or particularly cold periods. For this function they were one of the focuses of the 2025 edition of ‘Stone Fruit Day’, organised by Washington State University, on 22 January.

Data from one study show that the fruit set percentage of the artificially pollinated flowers was only 1.1 per cent, compared to 15.4 per cent for the freely pollinated flowers. Furthermore, cherries from the freely pollinated flowers showed superior quality attributes.

The study conducted by several Canadian research centres used pollen 'sampled' by bees to perform metagenomic monitoring of plant viruses. In detail, viruses extracted from pollen RNA were compared with RNA extracted from leaves and flowers.

The health and effectiveness of honey bees during pollination were examined in the study conducted in Tasmania, Australia, using bird nets and polyethylene rain covers. Bees were fitted with RFID identification systems and were tagged during two consecutive seasons.
