Alara is the biggest grower in Turkey with 220 ha of orchards for production out of peak season. Different dynamics are emerging since the last 10 years that are threatening the future of the business. Actions for sustainable production are becoming more and more important.

‘We aim to export around 120,000 tonnes,’ said Hayrettin Ucak, deputy coordinator of the Aegean Exporters' Association. ’We will be able to achieve exports of USD 300 million if an ideal price for producers and exporters is formed on the market.

From 2013 to 2022, world production increased from 2.3 to 2.75 million tonnes, while trade flows rose from 350,000 to 940,000 tonnes, an increase of 266%. The value of traded goods reached a record 4.3 billion euro.

"The priority is for Turkey to achieve sustainable growth, leveraging its potential in exports," said Hayrettin Uçak. "Chile, while producing 10% of the world's cherries, exports 30%. Turkey, on the other hand, produces 30% but exports only 10%."

"We expect to harvest 1,000 tonnes in 2026," says Yigit Gokyigit, sales coordinator, "our annual harvest will increase to 1,800 tonnes by 2029. We expect larger sizes, such as 26+ and 28+, from our orchards."

The objective of the research was to evaluate the performance of the cultivar '0900 Ziraat' grafted onto the semi-vigorous rootstocks Krymsk, Gisela 6 and Piku 1. Four breeding forms were applied to these cultivar/rootstock combinations: VCL, SSA, UFO and KGB.

The outlook for the 2023/24 season is worrying, with an expected 21% decrease in total cherry production due to adverse weather conditions, such as frost and heavy rains, which have affected flowering and fruit set in several countries, particularly Poland and Italy.

Chile is by far the largest cherry exporter globally, exporting 414,000 tonnes of cherries from November 2022 to February 2023. By region, Europe is the largest producer of cherries and accounts for 32% of global production.

The Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) has issued a consumer warning through German authorities after high levels of three pesticides were detected in cherries imported from Turkey. Another alert has been notified by Denmark one week later.
