The trial block, located about 50 kilometers from San Salvador de Jujuy, is in a region bordering Bolivia and at the same altitude as the Antofagasta region in Chile, and would provide a microclimate for the production of ultra-early stone fruits in an extreme production zone.

‘The fruits are in formation and are taking on a reddish colour in some early varieties,’ said Aníbal Caminiti, ‘We have had a significant accumulation of cold hours. The Patagonia area exceeds the cold accumulation of the last six years by 15%'.

Due to their differentiated quality, these cherries obtained the first Denomination of Origin of the province. Furthermore, the cherries produced in Los Antiguos are the last to be harvested in the southern hemisphere, in the period between December and mid-February.

Aníbal Caminiti confirmed that the strategy is aimed at fruit that arrives later in the markets. He also recalled that the strategies of the Argentinian industry have to coexist with the strong presence of Chilean cherries, not only in China but in all markets.

Chile is by far the largest cherry exporter globally, exporting 414,000 tonnes of cherries from November 2022 to February 2023. By region, Europe is the largest producer of cherries and accounts for 32% of global production.

Argentinean cherry exports totalled 1,535 tonnes, a drop of 36 per cent compared to last year. Aníbal Caminiti claims that exportable volumes will recover as the harvest progresses and emphasised the quality of this season.
