A Chinese study analyzed the effects of five different rootstocks on Summit sweet cherry cultivar during the fruit veraison phase with or without nitrogen-free nutrient fertilizers. The five rootstocks tested were: Mahaleb, Gisela 5, and three hybrid selections H11, H17, and H22.

Some dwarfing rootstock selections for Gisela® cherry trees have recently been licensed in New Zealand and will be more widely available to growers from 2026. Gisela® 12 and 6 are currently being tested in Central Otago.

In Chile, the post-transplant survival, canopy growth and productivity of two cultivars were evaluated: Lapins on Colt and Regina on Gisela 12. The cultivars were grown with root volumes of 100%, 50% and 25% and with bare-root or bagged nursery plants.

The Tieton/Landing 2 and Tieton/Gisela 6 combinations were used by analysing 4-year-old plants. The PaMYBF gene was identified and it was noted that the expression of PaMYBF was significantly higher in the phloem tissue of the scion when grafted onto the Gisela 6 rootstock.
