Cherry trees in Trentino-South Tyrol: the E.Mach Foundation releases a research guide on the territory

In recent years, cherry cultivation in Trentino-Alto Adige has undergone a significant transformation, becoming a highly specialized activity. This type of cultivation, although it requires substantial initial investments, allows for the production of crops with high economic and qualitative value.

A key element for the success of this crop is represented by the skills acquired by the producers, supported by technical assistance which plays a crucial role in helping farmers improve their abilities. To ensure an effective service, it is essential that technicians are constantly updated, a result made possible only through close collaboration with research, especially when it is conducted in the same production environments.

The Fondazione Edmund Mach and the Laimburg Experimental Centre have been working for some time on research and experimental projects dedicated to cherries, directing their activities based on the needs and issues identified in the region.

This monograph is the result of the collaboration between the two institutions, with the aim of sharing with regional producers the results of the research carried out in Trentino-Alto Adige. The topics covered range from qualitative aspects, such as the study of maturation and cold resistance of the Kordia variety, to agronomic aspects, including the use of mechanical pruning, the analysis of different training systems, and the testing of alternative rootstocks to the traditional Gisela®5.
