With the start of the new year, many are looking for simple ways to improve their diet with nutrient-rich foods, aiming to achieve goals such as better sleep, higher energy levels, improved gut health, and more.

Karley Lange of Northwest Cherries, operating within the Washington State Fruit Commission, emphasizes the value of these fruits, stating: “Research shows that adding sweet cherries to the diet – whether fresh, frozen, dried, or canned – offers powerful health benefits. Thanks to simple preservation techniques, cherries are not just a summer fruit!”

In-depth studies, in collaboration with Washington State University, have identified the main health benefits:

  • Sleep better - Sweet cherries are a natural source of serotonin, melatonin, and tryptophan. Studies suggest that these compounds can improve sleep quality, giving the body time to repair and restore itself. Consuming a portion of cherries, about half a cup dried, one hour before bed, can stabilize and regulate sleep.
  • Stress reduction - In addition to promoting sleep, serotonin can reduce stress and improve mood. At the cellular level, the phenols in cherries also act as antioxidants and offer some protection against oxidative stress.
  • Promote gut health - A recent study suggests that the phenols and anthocyanins in dark sweet cherries may have a beneficial effect on the gut microbiome. The compounds seem to control certain inflammation-related bacteria, preventing the proliferation of one type and reducing the presence of another.
  • Energy boost - With a lower glycemic index compared to most other fruits, dark sweet cherries help maintain blood sugar levels, and their fiber content keeps you feeling full longer. Paired with heart-healthy nuts, dried sweet cherries make the perfect snack for a quick bite and with good endurance.
  • Skin nourishment - Dark sweet cherries are rich in antioxidants, which can give winter skin a boost. Antioxidants stabilize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, which can age the skin. Sweet cherries also contain vitamin C, which plays a role in collagen production and maintaining a healthy complexion.

For over 35 years, Chukar Cherries, a family-owned business, has been dedicated to the natural dehydration of Northwest cherries.

“We use cherries ripened from local trees. We dry our cherries at low temperatures to maintain their original nutritional value without adding preservatives or sugars,” explains Tim Oten, General Manager of Chukar Cherries. This dedication allows consumers to enjoy a delicious and nutritious start to the year.”
