German cherry harvest: an early start between frost and rain

The cherry harvest in Germany is already underway in many cultivation regions. Thanks to the early bloom, this year the season is starting relatively early, but late frosts and heavy rains are causing crop losses in many places.

Altes Land

The sweet cherry season has begun in Altes Land. Fruit grower Henning Ramdohr from Hollern is harvesting varieties such as Naprumi. The early start of the season is unusual and is due to the particularly early bloom this year.

Thuringia

Fruit growers in Thuringia are expecting an extremely poor cherry harvest this year. The reason lies in the damage caused by frost, which has led to significant losses of stone and pome fruits, said Joachim Lissner, the managing director of the state horticultural association, to the German press agency on Thursday.

"There is almost nothing to harvest." During the late April frosts, flowers and some fruits froze. As a result, farms were able to harvest only 10-15% of the normal amount.

Saxony-Anhalt

This year, cherry trees in Saxony-Anhalt can be harvested earlier. The farmers' association told the German press agency on Thursday that the harvest was relatively early due to the warmth of the previous months. However, late frosts have severely damaged many crops.
