The official recognition as a Protected Geographical Indication is now just one step away for the Cherry of the Veronese Hills. After years of joint efforts between institutions, producers, and agricultural associations, the dossier is ready to be evaluated by the Ministry.

A decisive step to enhance a symbolic product of Veronese agriculture and its territorial identity.

PGI closer than ever: statement from the Veneto Region

“By early November the Region will issue its final opinion, allowing the Ministry to complete the process for the PGI,” announced regional councilor Alberto Bozza (FI), during a meeting at the Coldiretti Verona headquarters.

Bozza, who has closely followed the political and institutional path toward recognition, recalled the joint commitment with Coldiretti and the Cherry Growers Association to achieve this important result.

The PGI label represents a key recognition for the quality and traceability of the Cherry of the Veronese Hills, as well as a strategic tool to strengthen competitiveness in national and international markets.

Veronese agriculture under pressure: extreme climate and outdated regulations

The meeting also addressed the challenges faced by the local agricultural sector. The violent weather events of September 1 and 2 — tornadoes and hailstorms — caused serious damage to numerous farms in the province.

According to Bozza, it is urgent to simplify and speed up compensation procedures: “The Region and the Ministry must intervene with updated regulatory tools, since current laws are no longer suitable to face the impact of climate change.”

The energy issue: concerns over BESS in the Verona area

Another hot topic raised during the meeting was the spread of BESS, battery energy storage systems, in the Verona area. Bozza called for stricter and more coordinated regulation, both at regional and national levels: “Clear governance is needed to ensure safety and respect for the territory.”

Between identity, resilience, and future

The political commitment expressed by Alberto Bozza moves on several fronts, but with a clear guiding principle: defending and enhancing local agri-food excellence.

The upcoming PGI recognition for the Cherry of the Veronese Hills marks a crucial step for the productive identity of the territory, as well as a push toward greater protection and sustainability for Veronese agriculture.
