In Extremadura, agricultural insurance subsidies are being increased: up to 75 per cent for cherries in 2026

Insuring crops is becoming less expensive for growers in Extremadura. The Junta de Extremadura is increasing agricultural insurance subsidies in 2026, with greater support for the cherry sector.

The general subsidy rises from 40% to 45% of the national subsidy, while support for the cherry sector increases from 60% to 75% of the net basic commercial premium, after deducting the national subsidy.

The new rates apply retroactively from 1 January 2026, meaning the increase also covers eligible policies taken out in the first few months of the year.

Cherries: regional subsidy rises to 75%

For the cherry sector, the change represents an increase of 15 percentage points. The Junta's subsidy rises from 60% to 75% of the net basic commercial premium, after deducting the national subsidy.

According to the regional administration, the aid will therefore cover three quarters of the remaining cost after national support has been applied.

The measure aims to strengthen protection for a crop exposed to weather events that can affect both harvest volumes and fruit quality.

The goal is to reduce insurance costs for growers and encourage the use of policies as a tool to safeguard the financial stability of farms.

Support also increases for other insurance schemes

The increase in aid forms part of an amendment to Decree 165/2025, which promotes combined agricultural insurance. The update incorporates the new rates set out in the Budget Law.

Across the various eligible insurance schemes, the general regional subsidy increases by five percentage points, from 40% to 45% of the national subsidy.

The two measures use different calculation bases: the general subsidy is calculated on the national aid amount, while support for cherries applies to the net basic commercial premium after deducting the national subsidy.

Retroactive application and refunds for existing policies

The new rates take effect from 1 January 2026, extending the benefit to eligible policies taken out before the amendment was approved.

For contracts signed between 1 January and 4 August 2026, AGROSEGURO will pay the difference resulting from the increased subsidy. The Junta de Extremadura requires payment to be made before 1 November 2026.

Farmers and livestock breeders who took out insurance in the first part of the year will therefore also benefit from the increased regional support.

Who benefits from the subsidies?

The aid is available to individuals and legal entities operating agricultural holdings that have taken out eligible policies during 2026.

The regional administration aims to reduce the financial burden on farm operators and encourage wider uptake of combined agricultural insurance.

These policies allow farms to transfer part of the financial risk associated with insured loss events, limiting their impact on farm income.

For cherry growers in Extremadura, the increased subsidy provides support for risk management.

Risk management

Against a backdrop of increasingly frequent weather events, as described by the Junta, keeping policy costs down can help strengthen protection for agricultural production and the financial continuity of farms.
