Types of Cracking

Due to the ongoing climate changes of recent years, we are increasingly facing rainy springs or rainfall events close to or during harvest. Therefore, it is essential to implement strategies to reduce fruit cracking damage. I suggest the following:

Peduncular cracking: may occur with light rainfall up to 5 mm and is caused by water accumulation at the pedicel insertion area.

New research on the SIT method to combat Drosophila suzukii advances

Crop protection

07 Jan 2025

A genetics company and Oregon State University have released sterile males of Drosophila suzukii that have been genetically modified not to reproduce. The idea is that they will one day mate by laying non-viable eggs, thus causing the pest's population to collapse.

Light and cherry quality: three TCP proteins identified as potential regulators of fruit quality

Understanding fruit cracking in sweet cherry: physiological dynamics, varietal influence and implications for breeding

Breeding

19 Dec 2025

Cracking in sweet cherry fruit can lead to total crop loss. A Ukrainian study highlights genetic and morphological causes, showing how variety and ripening time affect split types. Cultivars like Mliivska žovta, Mirazh and Amazonka showed the best resilience.

Dehydration dynamics of cherries in cold storage and effect of high-pressure humidification after hydrocooling

Post-harvest

19 Dec 2025

A detailed study highlights how high-pressure humidification in cold storage rooms significantly reduces cherry dehydration after hydrocooling, preserving fruit quality during post-harvest storage and before packaging, even in heterogeneous conditions.
