The second phase of Cherry Growers Australia and Agriculture Victoria's Cherries Traceability Pilot will begin this season in collaboration with CherryHill Orchards, a Victorian cherry grower and exporter. The two-year project was launched in 2022 and in the first year focused on implementing traceability through RFID technology.

Nick Noske, president of Cherry Growers Australia, emphasised the importance of traceability in improving the competitiveness of cherries in international markets by enhancing product provenance, authenticity and safety. This pilot project aims to provide valuable information for the cherry industry.

Paul Ryan, CEO of technology provider Trust Codes, said the project will help set new standards of trust and accountability in the supply chain. Trust Codes will provide advanced traceability technology using unique GS1 Digital Link-enabled QR codes.

Stephen Riseborough, director of CherryHill Orchards, highlighted how the traceability technology will provide transparency on the origins and journey of the company's fresh produce, ensuring that cherries can be accurately traced back to their origin. This helps to ensure that the cherries are clean, safe and reliable products, helping to prevent food fraud and protect the Australian brand.
