During a recent technical field day organized by ANA Chile®, growers and exporters attended the opening of boxes of different cherry varieties. On this occasion, Areko stood out for the exceptional condition of the fruit after storage, establishing itself as a strategic alternative for the market.

Areko’s key attributes

After 40 days of cold storage, Areko showed an excellent presentation at box opening, with firm fruit to the touch, clear visual freshness and green stems, a key indicator of quality at destination, along with good organoleptic quality, characterized by a balanced flavor.

This variety of German origin, obtained from a cross between Kordia and Regina, stands out for its heart-shaped form and fruit sizes that consistently exceed 30 mm. Its main competitive advantage is stable productivity, especially in areas where Kordia tends to show production difficulties.

Availability and licensing

Areko is already commercially available. ANA Chile®, as the exclusive license administrator in the country, has sublicensed its propagation to four authorized nurseries: Vivero Los Olmos, Univiveros, Vivero El Tambo and Vivero Buenos Aires de Angol.

Progress within the UNIBO program

The meeting also made it possible to evaluate the post-harvest results, after 34 days of cold storage, of the Sweet Saretta® and Sweet Stephany® varieties. Both belong to the genetic program of the University of Bologna (UNIBO) and are currently undergoing semi-commercial trials. Both varieties stood out for fruit size and firmness.
