Ultraviolet rays against Botrytis cinerea

Post-harvest

12 Sep 2024

Researchers in Uzbekistan evaluated the effectiveness of different combinations of distance and duration of ultraviolet (UV-C) treatment in comparison to untreated cherries. Ten cherries per treatment were placed in a polypropylene container at room temperature for five days.

Cherry pomace can be valorised in a sustainable way

Quality

10 Sep 2024

Although sweet cherry pomace waste is obtained after juice production, it still contains significant amounts of dietary fibre and value-added compounds, including polyphenols. For this reason, it can be used as a renewable raw material to generate bioactive compounds.

Seaweed for a quality production

Quality

06 Sep 2024

The aim of the study conducted at Qinghai University (China) was to test whether seaweed-based biostimulants have the ability to counteract delayed fruit ripening and improve the antioxidant properties and quality of cherries treated with gibberellic acid.

Performance of the Super Slender Axe (SSA) training system on Gisela 6 and MaxMa14 rootstocks

Planting systems

04 Sep 2024

The objective of a Turkish research was to compare the performance of the cultivar ‘0900 Ziraat’ on two different rootstocks in terms of phenological characteristics, fruit quality, yield, harvest and pruning times, modelled with the SSA training system.

New markers for the genetic selection of flowering time in cherry trees

Breeding

03 Sep 2024

The aim of an investigation conducted in the Czech Republic was to identify molecular markers that could be relied upon to predict the onset of flowering in sweet cherries by creating an assay that analysed the identified molecular markers in a single reaction.

Genes for resistance to low temperatures and salt stress identified

Breeding

30 Aug 2024

In a Chinese research three genes that regulate cold shock protein synthesis and named PavCSP were identified and analysed. Quantitative PCR analysis revealed a variety of expression patterns, with PavCSP1-3 showing specific activity in the upper part of the stem.

Variables influencing cold tests of cherry blossom buds

Tech management

28 Aug 2024

Frosts can cause considerable economic losses and, therefore, limit the presence of orchards in areas subject to these phenomena. Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA) is a method often used to assess the cold resistance of plant organs to survive cold temperatures.

Salt stress can be alleviated through the application of salicylic acid

Tech management

26 Aug 2024

The investigation conducted at Shanghai Jiao Tong University evaluated the efficacy of salicylic acid in mitigating the damaging effects of salt stress on cherry rootstocks and studied the molecular mechanisms behind the applications of this phytohormone.

The effects of calcium and biostimulants on cracking

Crop protection

22 Aug 2024

The aim of the research conducted by Portuguese and Spanish universities was to improve the quality and profitability of sweet cherry trees cv. Sweetheart by administering foliar biostimulants based on calcium and seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum).

To extend shelf life there is a need to combine several technologies

Post-harvest

22 Aug 2024

Modified Passive Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) is widely used during storage and transport after harvest. MAP allows an adequate moisture level to be maintained within the package, preventing dehydration of the fruit and stalks.
