The trial, conducted from July to September 2024 at Ana Fruit’s facilities in Isparta, Türkiye, tested the FreshSens technology with approximately 30 tons of Regina and Ziraat 0900 cherries, stored under controlled atmosphere conditions using 200 FreshSens units.

Evapotranspiration and water requirements in sweet cherries in California

Tech management

03 Oct 2024

Many growers rely on pressure bomb measurements or crop coefficients provided by local UCCE offices to determine their crops' irrigation needs. New technologies for modeling or remote sensing of evapotranspiration estimates are emerging to help manage irrigation.

The use of biological control to decrease the presence of Monilinia spp. in post-harvest conditions

Post-harvest

03 Oct 2024

Although chemical pesticides have high antimicrobial power, their use is becoming restricted due to European regulations. One alternative is biocontrol, which uses antagonistic agents or metabolites generated by them to block the spread of unwanted organisms.

Effective strategies to improve calcium translocation in cherry orchard

Post-harvest

02 Oct 2024

Calcium is not very mobile throughout the plant. The lack of transport capacity makes it difficult to reach the growing fruits. Another issue is that Calcium follows the water flow through the xylem, which means that its absorption is closely tied to transpiration capacity.

Biopesticides based on essential oils are the future for Drosophila suzukii control

Crop protection

02 Oct 2024

The use of a combination of various essential oils may often prove more advantageous than their individual application, as the synergistic effect of the combination of essential oils may broaden the range of pests that can be affected, thus improving their overall effectiveness.

One of the key elements of this growth is export innovation: the Cherry Express programme, created about five years ago, has reduced transit times between Chilean ports and China by 10 days, ensuring that the fruit arrives in optimal conditions.

INSTINCT project: artificial intelligence and traps to combat Drosophila suzukii

Crop protection

01 Oct 2024

“A big step forward would be knowing the exact moment when an infestation is about to occur,” says Silvia Schmidt, an entomologist at the Laimburg Research Center. “That way, nets and pesticides could only be used when truly necessary.”
